ELTE remains the best Hungarian university
On 15 May, the Center for World University Rankings published its 2024 World University Rankings, which this year covered nearly 21,000 institutions. The list includes the top 2000 universities in the world. Since 2012, CWUR has ranked the world's higher education institutions on the basis of teaching quality, graduate employability, teaching excellence, and highly cited publications and citations. Eötvös Loránd University is ranked 544th in the 2024 global ranking. ELTE is ranked in the top 2.6% of universities in the world, and has been the leading higher education institution in Hungary since 2014, according to CWUR. The result puts ELTE in 214th place in the European ranking, in the same category as institutions such as the University of Ferrara, the University of Siena, the University of Hannover, the University of Potsdam, the University of Zagreb, and the École normale supérieure de Lyon in France.
Other Hungarian universities that made it into the top 1000 were Semmelweis University (651st), the University of Szeged (705th), the University of Debrecen (797th), and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (988th). The top ten rankings remain unchanged from last year, with Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Stanford taking the top ten places, with two British and eight American universities still sharing the top ten.
