We celebrate the International Day of Special Needs Education
In 2025, we celebrate a special anniversary: it is 125 years since the profession was first taught at tertiary level in our country, within the walls of our predecessor institution. On the occasion of this anniversary, on the 13th of April, 2025, the International Day of Special Needs Education, the Bárczi Gusztáv Faculty of Special Needs Education of Eötvös Loránd University, the Hungarian Association of Special Needs Teachers (MAGYE) and the International Society of Special Needs Education (IGhB) celebrated the anniversary of the training with a colourful programme of events.

The aim of the event was not only to commemorate our shared historical past but also to promote a forward-looking dialogue within the professional community. The programme opened with a historically themed walk, starting at the building in Bethlen tér, the former site of the training. The meeting brought together nearly fifty former and current trainers, students and family members. Flowers were laid at the plaque in the lobby of the building, paying tribute to the legacy of the institution that was located there between 1956 and 2000.

Before the walk, Tamás Reményi, President of MAGYE, and Gabriella Papp, Dean of the ELTE BGGYK, welcomed the participants. Tamás Reményi emphasised that “our education is 125 years old, and this walk is an opportunity to remember and plan the future together - which is in our hands.” Gabriella Papp also shared her personal memories with the audience, recalling her first visit to the building in 1982, when she was a student - and since that time she has been an active part of the development of the training as a staff member and manager.

The walk progressed towards the Ecseri út campus, where the programme continued. Along the way, new participants joined, making the event a real community experience - all generations were represented, from young students to older colleagues.

Visitors to the Ecseri út building were able to see the exhibition titled “Autism with a Thousand Faces”, as well as an exhibition on both sides of the statue of Gusztáv Bárczi.

Before the afternoon activities, the participants made a live image, creating the B125 sculpture in the faculty garden, which was captured in exciting photographs. In the afternoon, parallel events took place, with a film screening in one of the rooms showing a selection of interviews with key figures in the field of special needs education, giving a deeper insight into the intellectual heritage of the profession.

In room A/7, a richly detailed exhibition on the history of curative education recalled the memories of the past decades, with the help of documents and photographs from the past. Those who wanted to take home a memento could take a photograph of themselves with iconic artefacts of special needs education, with friends and colleagues in the photograph corner in the adjacent room.

They could also listen to excerpts from the lectures of the Gyógy (tea) event series in the framework of the 125th anniversary, and Professor Dr. Andrea Erdélyi's lecture was an outstanding professional experience, which shed new light on the possibilities of international cooperation.

A German-language guided tour of the exhibitions was also offered, which was a particularly interesting experience for our international guests. The exhibition titled “Impressions from the life of our namesake” in the foyer of the Faculty Library was also open to the public, and many guests lingered for a long time in front of the tables and pictures. On the ground floor of the building there was also a special Time Capsule, where visitors could share their thoughts and messages for the future generation of special needs teachers. Many people had consciously prepared for the occasion: in Vác, for example, an entire community - students and teachers - had come together to formulate their messages and send them to the event in a beautiful envelope. This gesture also shows the deep commitment and love with which the participants were connected to the event.

Throughout the day, professional discussions, national and international meetings, joint planning and much laughter made the day and the anniversary even more memorable. It was touching to see generations remembering together the past of special needs education - and dreaming together for the future.

Thank you so much for coming and celebrating together!
