The prevalence of neuromyths among Hungarian in-service and pre-service teachers

Neuromyths are false beliefs based on the misunderstanding, oversimplification or misinterpretation of scientific facts related to the nervous system's function. Neuromyths are prevalent in education worldwide: many teachers believe in neuromyths, which affects their educational practice. The aim of our research is to present data from a large-sample survey study assessing the neuroliteracy of pre-service and in-service Hungarian teachers and the prevalence of neuromyths, as compared with previous studies from other countries. We would also like to explore the background of the neuromyths that are the most prevalent in Hungary.  

Assessment of speech perception using reduced speech stimuli

Paired sensory organs and limbs have symmetrical anatomy but there is often asymmetry in their function. The latter phenomenon, which is often referred to as laterality, might manifest as the preference as well as better performance of the organ/limb on either side of the body. In case of the ear, laterality is typically examined by dichotic tests: two different stimuli are given simultaneously to the left and right ear and their perception is compared. In case of speech stimuli, most people tend to present a right ear advantage (dominance), that is, they process stimuli given to the right ear better and faster. The aim of our research is to assess ear dominance by a new method, using monaural, reduced speech stimuli (sine wave speech and vocoded speech) and explore the  relationships between various types of ear dominance and handedness.
